The Elizabeth Line project
The delivery of lift and escalator systems on large infrastructure projects like the Elizabeth Line is highly complex, requiring close coordination between architectural, structural, and MEP disciplines. Challenges such as late-stage involvement, design non-compliance, incomplete assurance documentation, and stakeholder misalignment can lead to delays and costly rework if not addressed early in the process.
RHPPM supported the successful integration and delivery of these systems across multiple stations by providing technical leadership and fostering strong collaboration between stakeholders. This proactive approach reduced risks, ensured regulatory compliance, and contributed to the timely handover of fully operational assets, supporting the Elizabeth Line’s successful opening in 2022.

The Challenge
The delivery of lift and escalator systems within large-scale infrastructure projects such as the Elizabeth Line presents significant complexity due to the high level of integration required between architectural design, civil and structural works, and multiple MEP systems. Late-stage involvement, as experienced on Bond Street, further increased challenges related to non-compliance in design and delivery of structural and systems interfaces, incomplete assurance documentation, and programme delays. Additionally, the procurement process and coordination between stakeholders introduced risks in aligning design intent, installed assets, and regulatory compliance (e.g. EN81-20, EN115), often leading to costly rework if not addressed early.
The RHPPM Approach
RHPPM’s involvement enabled the successful integration and delivery of lift and escalator systems across the three stations, supporting programme recovery where required and ensuring compliance with project and regulatory requirements. The proactive and embedded approach reduced risks, minimized rework, and protected both programme and cost. By fostering strong collaboration across stakeholders and providing technical leadership, RHPPM contributed to the timely handover of assets into operation, ultimately supporting the opening and functionality of key infrastructure within the Elizabeth Line.
The Outcome
The Elizabeth Line successfully opened to the public in 2022, with lift and escalator systems delivered into operational service across multiple stations.
RHPPM’s involvement on these three stations ensured that vertical transport systems were fully compliant, integrated, and aligned with both the architectural vision and operational requirements of the railway.
The project reinforced the effectiveness of RHPPM’s delivery model: that early engagement, technical expertise, and embedded collaboration are critical to managing complexity and achieving successful outcomes on large-scale infrastructure projects.
The experience gained on Crossrail continues to inform RHPPM’s approach on subsequent projects, including HS2’s Old Oak Common Station—further demonstrating the value of specialist integration in the delivery of modern transport infrastructure.
